How to Win at Gomoku

There is no move that guarantees a win from every position. A useful beginner routine is simpler: win now, block now, build a threat, then look for two threats at once.

1. Take a win before building

Before planning a new attack, scan every line for a move that wins immediately. A missed win is more expensive than a clever setup.

Practice immediate wins

2. Block an immediate loss

If your opponent can win on the next move, defense comes first. Find every winning point they have and remove the threat before starting your own plan.

Try a forced block

3. Build threats with room to grow

A straight open three has empty space at both ends. It does not guarantee a win, but it gives an attack more ways to develop than a line that is already closed on one side.

4. Look for one move that creates two threats

A double threat makes the defender answer more than one future winning point. Learning to recognize these forks is more useful than memorizing one opening sequence.

What should you practice first?

Start with positions that have a mechanically checkable answer instead of memorizing a long list of opening moves. GomokuNow Practice gives you short board positions, immediate feedback, and then hands you back to a full game.
